The
Khibiny mountains are almost unknown to the Western tourist. It
is a mountain country above the Polar Circle, in the very heart
of the Kola Peninsula, with the highest point m.Tchasnotchor(1191m).
Traces of the glacier from the Ice Age -- huge circuses, canyons
and granite outcrops create an unforgettable mountainous sight.
On highland plateaux, near the town the "Lunohod-1" (moon-research
vehicle) has been tested. The town boasts the Most Northerly Botanical
Garden in the world. Kirovsk is one of the resorts for downhill
skiing.
The best period for
a ski-tour is from mid of February till mid of May, because of low
temperature and short day light earlier. The period day temperature
averages -5o to -15oC, with night to -25oC,
and after March 22 the day light becomes more than 12 hours.
The route lies across
open mountainous countryside at the altitude of 200 to 1000m. Nights
are in a hut and in a heated tent-refuge in forest zones. The moderate
altitude of the mountains (ab.1000m), and mild climate makes it
possible for skiers to be a pioneer of the wild land.

Rem. The
heated hut is good. You can dry you clothes, have a rest, discuss
everything in warm atmosphere, and have a night look to charm the
Aurora Borealis. The big tents-refuges have heaters, and whole team
will spend a good time in the tents surrounded by the wild forest
on a bank of rivers.
